Corded Window Compliance

New Blinds and other internal window coverings must now comply with national laws.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) have introduced regulations following concerns that looped cords can pose a strangulation risk to children.

Lessors ,agents and suppliers must comply with the new mandatory standard when supplying new window coverings in rental properties.  While it is not essential to replace existing blinds the risk can be minimised by implementing the following safety precautions.

  • Safety Warning Labels – reminding you of the hazards of cords
  • Cleats or tensioners installed 1600mm off the ground so pull cords are out of the reach of children
  • If a cord is lower than 1600mm it must be tensioned to prevent a loop of 220mm or longer being formed
  • Do not place cots/beds or furniture near any cords- Ensure any loose or non- secured looped cords cannot be reached from the floor by climbing on furniture –always keep cords out of the reach of children

Sunstate Property Compliance  can inspect your  window furnishings to ensure the current standard is being met.
